Specialized Units

Walker Police Department sworn law enforcement personnel have the opportunity to participate in a number of Specialized Units.

Crash Investigation

The Crash Investigation Team members conduct a scientific analysis of traffic crash scenes using math, technology, and observation to determine their cause and involved factors. Crash Investigators receive specialized training and use the Walker PD Total Station and Autel Evo II drone to digitally map and diagram scenes of fatal and serious injury traffic crashes.

Drone Team

All officers on the Drone Pilot Team are Part 107 FAA Certified Remote Pilots. They conduct aerial missions both within the City of Walker and in surrounding jurisdictions during mutual aid scenarios. Walker PD drone pilots receive specialized training that enables them to provide direct support in various situations, including emergency events, tactical operations, disaster response, crime scene and crash scene forensics collection, and firefighting activities. Additionally, they may use their drones to conduct aerial patrols of high-incident areas. The drone pilot team trains regularly and collaborates frequently with other specialized units, such as the Special Response Team, to prepare for critical events.

Detective Bureau

Walker PD road patrol officers can conduct their case follow-up. However, due to call volume or other circumstances, many cases are instead turned over to the Detective Bureau for continued investigatory actions. Detectives' duties include conducting follow-up interviews, communicating with crime victims, interrogating suspects, viewing surveillance footage, issuing warrants, sending crime bulletins to road patrol, and carrying out field activities such as surveilling addresses or persons of interest. One member of the Detective Bureau is assigned to a multijurisdictional task force called the Kent Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (KANET). KANET focuses on investigating vice-related crimes such as gambling, prostitution, drugs, and alcohol violations.

Honor Guard

The Walker Police Department Honor Guard consists of seven members who participate in special events both within the City and around the state. They proudly represent the City of Walker and the Walker Police Department by marching in parades, attending community events, and being present at funerals or memorials.

Mobile Field Force

The Mobile Field Force unit is part of a metro team that responds to riots and crowd control situations, including law enforcement personnel from Walker, Kent County, Kentwood, and Grandville. The Mobile Field Force unit was stationed in downtown Grand Rapids throughout the riots in the summer of 2020.

Special Response Team (SRT)

The Special Response Team (SRT) is deployed to address critical incidents within the City of Walker. Special Response Team members have access to specialty equipment and participate in monthly training to better prepare them for any incident type for which they may be called. Examples of situations the SRT may respond to are barricaded subjects, active shootings, clearing buildings suspected of containing dangerous subjects, and shootings in which a suspect is still at large.

Support Services Unit

This unit comprises two Community Resource Officers and the 59th District Court Security Officer. The Community Officers serve as liaisons between the department and the community, responsible for school visits, communications with the public & media, community education seminars, and outreach referrals. The Court Security Officer is responsible for consistent security in the courtroom, as well as during inmate transport and lodging. They also complete warrant packing and subpoena service.
